This is a balanced biography of Raymond Cattell, discussing both the man and his work. Athough Cattell's own books are very difficult to read, even for an expert in the subject area, Gillis's book is readable to the layman, explaining the significance of Cattell's work. That is no easy feat, given the complexity of Cattell's achievements with factor analysis, personality, and intelligence testing. As someone who knew Cattell, I can also say that Gillis's observations are consistent with my own view of the man. Gillis has been diligent and truthful in his biography.
Gillis does not achieve this accuracy by limiting the biography to boring statements of fact or minor details. The book held my interest... it is written in an informal personal style that makes you feel as if you are there yourself as he relates stories and events. It is all the more interesting because Gillis includes just enough of his own life background to understand his perspective on Cattell, and to help readers understand the utility of Cattell's work to a psychologist.

Psychology Secret Genius edition by John Gillis Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews
A wonderful biography by Dr Gillis of one of the world's most important contributors to the scientific investigation of psychological phenomena. Over a lifetime of the never-ending pursuit for truth, Professor Raymond Cattell made monumental contributions to advancing psychological knowledge. Among his many outstanding contributions, Cattell founded the Society for Multivariate Experimental Psychology (SMEP), as well as the Institute for Personality and Ability Testing (IPAT), which has produced sophisticated psychological measurement instruments that have forever changed the face of psychological research and practice. Based on the peer-reviewed journal literature alone, Cattell was among the top ten most highly cited psychologists of the 20th century. Cattell’s lifelong research was focused on the psychometric elucidation and measurement of psychological constructs - an admirable pursuit fully deserving of the highest accolade, including the American Psychological Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award that he was so wrongfully denied.
Mr. Gillis gives the reader a rare view of Dr.Cattell, as a close friend and as a student and colleague. I found the biography to be very interesting and gained a welcome insight of the man, his research and his devotion to the study of personality.
An excellent book! Highly recommened to anyone who is interested in reading biographies since it is a biography of a genius and therefore very interesting and educative. A ‘must reading’ for all professionals who use personality, ability, and motivation questioners in their practice or in research. The author’s own research and explanations, which validate Dr. Cattell’s theory of personality and the ties he makes to Positive Psychology are very valuable contributions to personality theory.
As one of Cattell's fairly close friends and coworkers, I was pleased to recognize some aspects and to enhance my understanding of others. Gillis gives precious insights about the man, his personality and motivation. Habits of thought resulting from the author's studies of and with Cattell shine through.
Gillis has been an advocate, as have I, in the regrettable APA action about the lifetime achievement award - fully deserved and shamefully retracted.
This is a very readable biography that is unique among the Cattell bios I've read over the years in its depth. If you are looking for a book about the man himself that explains some of his work in layman's terms, I think you'll like it. Dr. Gillis obviously knows both the man and his work. The bibliography of Cattell's voluminous publications is uniquely thorough. There is also a bonus ending to the book outlining Gillis' work to reproduce Cattell's factor analysis of personality. This section is enlightening, because the "Big 5" personality factor model became widely accepted when most psychologists were unable to validate Cattell's 16-factor model. Gillis discovered that all the personality factors did not show up in the analysis until he used a sufficiently diverse set of subjects.
This is a balanced biography of Raymond Cattell, discussing both the man and his work. Athough Cattell's own books are very difficult to read, even for an expert in the subject area, Gillis's book is readable to the layman, explaining the significance of Cattell's work.
